Kishoreganj Correspondent:
This year, the cultivation of maize has increased in Haor
region. Farmers are now busy with corn cultivation. Last year showed the face
of profit, this year they have grown maize extensively. One can see field after
field of green corn fields as soon as one passes through Haor's Allweather
Road. It seems that the farmer's dreams of success are laughing in the wind of
the green corn. Just waiting to take home the harvest and calculate the profit
figure. Corn farming is less expensive, less maintenance, but almost triples
the profit. That's why the enthusiasm of farmers to grow maize in Howre of
Kishoreganj is increasing. Both costs and risks are high in paddy cultivation during
Boro season. Meanwhile, there is no loss without profit in corn farming. There
is a risk to rice cultivation in Haor region due to floods, but there is not
much risk to maize cultivation. Farmers can harvest maize before monsoon. Corn
farming is more or less profitable. And so the farmers here are moving forward
financially. Many farmers are now better off with their families growing corn
than lying fallow. Meanwhile, as maize cultivation is profitable and risk-free,
many local farmers are showing interest in maize cultivation in the future.
Kishoreganj District Agriculture Extension Directorate
(Khamarbari) Deputy Director Agronomist Md. Abdus Sattar said, this year maize
has been cultivated in Kishoreganj district on 12 thousand 500 hectares of
land. Corn farming is more profitable, less expensive. Besides, we are getting
farmers interested in growing maize rather than lying fallow. They are also
seeing a lot of profit in this.
