Rohingya woman, daughter among 4 killed in Cox's Bazar landslide

Three children and a woman were killed in two separate landslide incidents triggered by heavy rain in Cox's Bazar's Ukhiya and Chakaria upazilas on Monday evening.

The both accidents happened in the evening at a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila and Sabujpara area under Baraitali union of Chakaria upazila in the district.

The deceased were identified as Jannat Ara, 28, wife of Anowar Hossain, and their child Mahima Akhter, 2, residents of Block No- A/6 of the camp and Mohammad Sabid, 5, and his sister Tabassum, 1, children of Nazim Uddin, residents of Sabujpara area under the union..

Armed Police Battalion (APBn)-8, Ukhiya Camp commander Amir Zafar said a chunk of mud from a hill fell on Anowarul's house in the afternoon, leaving three members of the family critically injured.

Being informed, APBn and firefighters with the help of locals rescued them and took to nearby hospital where the physicians declared Jannat and her daughter Mahima dead. Meanwhile, Anowar is receiving treatment in the hospital.

Later, they were sent to Ukhiya Police Station for taking legal procedures, he added.

Besides, Chakaria Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) JP Dewan said,"A mound of a hill collapsed on one Anowar Hossain's house in Baraitali union of the upazila in the evening, leaving two of his children critically injured."

They were taken to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex but the duo succumbed to their injuries on the way to the hospital, he said.

Later, they were handed over to the family without autopsy upon their request, the UNO added.
