The miscreants allegedly attacked the car of an independent mayor candidate for upcoming Gazipur City Corporation polls Zayeda Khatun during election campaign in ward No 44 in the city on Thursday evening.

The son of the candidate and also the suspended GCC mayor Jahangir Alam claimed that some supporters of ruling Awami League-backed candidate Azmat Ullah Khan carried out the attack around 6:45pm on Thursday.

He said that all activists and supporters who had been campaigning for his mother had been beaten up. He said that they first hurled brickbats at my mother and him.

The ex-mayor claimed the miscreants have hatched a plan to have his mother killed.

Officer-in-Charge of Tongi East police station Ashraful Islam said he had heard about the attack but complaint had not been filed yet.

The official said according to the rules, a candidate should inform the police station concerned 24 hours before campaigning, but the candidate Zayeda did not inform them about it.

Returning Officer Faridul Islam said action will be taken if a complaint or case is filed with the police over the attack and vandalism. They will take action if we are informed.
