A female readymade garment (RMG) worker was killed in a clash with law enforcers in Konabari area of Gazipur on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Anjuara Khatun, 30, who worked at Islam Garment in Gazipur area, Sub-Inspector Bachhu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, confirmed the Daily Sun.
The victim received bullet injuries while a number of RMG makers were demonstrating in Konabari area this morning for a minimum wage of Tk 23,000.
As her condition deteriorated, Anjara, hailing from Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj, was rushed to the DMCH where she was declared dead this noon.
Meanwhile, the government on Tuesday announced Tk 12,500 as the minimum wage for the RMG workers.
The government has raised the basic wages by 56.25% and declared a minimum wage of Tk 12,500 for the RMG makers.
On October 21, the RMG workers demanded that their minimum wage be increased from the existing Tk 8,000 to Tk 20,390 while the owners have proposed to increase it to Tk 10,400.
Rejecting their owners’ proposal, the garment workers have been staging demonstrations in the capital and its adjoining areas to press home their demand for a minimum wage of Tk 23,000.
Soon after the announcement of the new salary structure, leaders of several RMG unions threatened to go for a tough movement forcing the government to meet their demand.
As news of the death spreads, a tense situation is gripping the Gazipur area.
Besides, the government has deployed a huge number of law enforcers from different law enforcement agencies, including BGB, Rapid Action Battalion, and police, to prevent any further untoward incident.
