Bidisha Ershad, wife of former President Hussain Muhammad Ershad, has been sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment in a fraud case over allegations of cheating in the sale of a flat.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshid Alam handed down the verdict on Wednesday, May 20.
Confirming the matter, the complainant’s lawyer Mohammad Hemayet Uddin Khan Hiron said that the court also imposed a fine of Tk 10,000 in addition to the prison term. As the accused is absconding, the court issued a warrant for her arrest.
According to the court documents, the case was lodged in 2008 with Gulshan police station by businessman Mosharraf Hossain Sikder, who accused Bidisha of fraud in connection with the sale of a flat at President Park in Baridhara.
Following a prolonged trial and examination of witnesses, the court found her guilty and pronounced the sentence.
When contacted, Bidisha Ershad said she was not aware of the court ruling.
