Bangladesh Coast Guard on Tuesday rescued some 39 people, including Rohingya refugees, after a trawler carrying them capsized in the Bay of Bengal while they were illegally trying to leave for Malaysia.
The incident took place in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf upazia on Tuesday morning.
Among the rescued, four people are Bangladeshi nationals, and the rest are Rohingya refugees, including women.
They were going to Malaysia on a trawler with help of some middlemen, but the vessel sank near the Baharchara area of the sea, said Contingent Commander of Baharchara Station of Bangladesh Coast Guard Delwar Hossain.
“Some 39 were rescued. We are still carrying out rescue operations,” he added.
Some of the rescued Rohingya said there were about 85 passengers in the trawler, and 65 of them are Rohingya refugees.
