At least seven people were killed and four others were injured after a sand-laden truck and a microbus collided head-on in Itakhola area of Shibpur upazila in Narsingdi early Friday.
The deceased were identified as Al Amin Hawlader, 37, son of Abdul Goni Hawlader of Rajapur in Jhalakathi, Sabuj Mia, 32, son of Mir Motahar Hosen of Delwar thana of Tangail, Al Amin, 27, son of Ayub Khan of Mirzapur, Abdul Awal, 40, son of Tofial Hawlader of Madaripur district, Arian alias Rayhan, 25, son of Mujibur Hawlader of Barishal’s Muladi, Raju Mia, 37, son of Dudu Mia of Sarishabari of Jamalpur district, and microbus driver Md Nasir Uddin.
All were the employees of a garment factory SB Netting Limited in Savar area.
Inspector Md Kabir Hossain, in-charge of Itakhola Highway police outpost, said the Sylhet-bound microbus collided head-on with a sand-laden truck coming from the opposite direction on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at around 3am on Friday.
Five people died on the spot and two persons died after being taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. On duty doctor of the emergency department of hospital Dr Md Tawhidul Alam confirmed about the dead.
Shibpur police said 11 employees of the garment factory were going to Sylhet for tour from Dhaka. The bodies have been kept at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital morgue, he said adding that police have arrested the truck driver.
The Inspector said the injured were initially taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for better treatment, said.
