Four killed as pickup hits van in Jhenidah

Four persons including two children were killed and two others injured when a pickup van rammed a battery-run van at Kotchandpur upazila in Jhenidah district on Thursday.

The accident happened around 12 noon in front of Kashipur Municipal College on Kaliganj-Kotchandpur road.

Three of the deceased were identified as Rabiul Islam's 41-day child Rafan Islam of village Elangi under Kotchandpur upazila; his niece Khuku Moni, 5, of village Bolakandor under Kaliganj upazila; and van driver Soleman Sheikh, 60, of Shahpur Spondonpara under the same upazila, and another unidentified person.

Rafan's mother Rima Khatun and Khuku Moni's grandmother Sheuli Begum were injured in the accident.

Neighbour of the deceased, Anjali Khatun, said Rafan's father Rabiul Islam works at a private company in Dhaka. Rafan's mother Rima Khatun went to Kotchandpur town with her child to meet a doctor. After meeting the doctor, she was returning home with her son boarding on the van.

On the other hand, deceased Khuku Moni went to Kotchandpur town with her grandmother Sheuli Begum. She was also returning home with her grandmother boarding the same van. When the van reached at Kashipur College crossing, a speeding pickup hit their van, leaving three including the two children dead on the spot.

Another unidentified person succumbed to his injuries on the way to Jashore Hospital, said Kotchandpur Model Police Station OC Moin Uddin.
