A court in Laxmipur on Wednesday sentenced five people to death and 14 to life term imprisonment for killing a local Jubo League leader in 2015.
At the same time, the court also fined the lifers Tk 20,000 each. In default, they will have to suffer one year more in jail.
Laxmipur Additional District and Sessions Judge Syeda Amina Farhin announced the judgement in the afternoon.
Jasim Uddin, public prosecutor of the court, confirmed the matter.
Victim Mamunur Rashid was the vice president of Chandraganj union Jubo League under Sadar upazila. He was a resident of Amani Laxmipur village of the upazila.
According to the prosecution, on May 18 in 2015, Mamunur Rashid was returning home from Deliai Bazar with his partner Omar Faruk riding on a motorcycle at night. Then the convicted persons stopped Mamunur and shot him in Amani area. He died on the spot.
Fakhrul Islam, brothers of the deceased, filed a murder case with Laxmipur Sadar Police Station the next day.
After investigation, police submitted a charge-sheet against the accused to the court.
The court delivered the verdict after taking depositions of the witnesses in the case.
