Chittagong depot fire yet to be doused after 62 hours

The fire at the container depot at Chittagong's Sitakunda continues to burn after 62 hours since it broke out on Saturday. 

Nine units of Fire Service and Civil Defence along with Bangladesh Army are still working tirelessly to put out the fire that killed 49 people so far.

Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Faruk Hossain Sikder, assistant deputy director of Chittagong Fire Service, said: "We have already said that the fire is under control. But it is yet to be extinguished completely.”

The fire service official said the firefighters were struggling to douse the fire as there were lots of flammable chemicals at the depot.

Earlier, a special team of the Bangladesh Army identified four containers full of chemicals at the BM Container Depot that caused the deadly fire. 

The families of some of the deceased have been lining up at the makeshift booth of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to provide DNA samples in order to identify their loved ones. 

Although firefighters managed to bring the deadly blaze under control on Sunday night, black smoke is still coming out from different places of the depot.
