Police arrested two smugglers along with 30 gold bars weighing 9.758 kg from Jamtala area on Navaran-Satkhira highway in Jashore early Friday.
The arrestees were identified as Robin, 45, son of Abul Sarkar of Sajadia village under Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla and Abul Kashem, 35, son of Kabir Hossain of Panch Gachia village of the same upazila.
Meanwhile, an unidentified gold smuggler was killed in an exchange of fire with the police.
ASP Jewel Imran of Jashore’s Navaron Circle said that acting on a tip-off, a joint team of Jashore DB and Sharsha Thana police took position at Panchpukur area of Jamtala on Navaron-Satkhira road.
“The law enforcers stopped a private car at around 1:00am in the area and recovered 30 gold bars searching body of one Robin. All of a sudden, 50/60 smugglers riding on 30/40 motorcycles swooped on the law enforcers and exploded bombs to snatch detainee Robin. The assailants fled the scene after the police fired bullets in self-defence,” he said.
Later, police recovered a bullet-hit body from the spot and taken to Upazila Health Complex for post-mortem, he said.
Two police constables named Tohid Islam and Ranveer were also injured in the attack.
Three motorcycles of the attackers also seized from the spot.
Mentioning that the estimated value of seized gold is Tk 7.5 crore, he said the gold and the detainees were handed over to Sharsha police station.
He said a process is underway to file a case in this connection.
