Sale of Zamzam water is banned in the country temporarily, said Director General (DG) of National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate AHM Shafiquzzaman on Monday.

The decision was taken at a meeting on Monday over sale of Zamzam water in the open market.

The sale of the holy water will be kept stopped till further decision, AHM Shafiquzzaman said.

"Zamzam water is being sold in Dhaka illegally and it has been commercialized. Now, the market committee would decide what to do."

He said the organisation will be sealed, if anyone violate this ban.

In the meeting, the salesmen said they bought one to two bottles from the pilgrims and, later, they sold those.

It came to the light following a report published on a online news portal. It was learnt that the Zamzam water was being sold in Baitul Mukarram market area at Tk 3,500 per litre.
