War crimes: One gets death, 3 jailed until death in Habiganj

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 has sentenced one person to death penalty and three others to imprisonment till death for committing war crimes at Lakhai upazila in Habiganj during the Liberation War in 1971.    

The three-member ICT-1 judges’ panel headed by Justice Md Shahinur Islam passed the order on Thursday. The other members are Justice Abu Ahmed Jomadar and Justice K M Hafijul Alam.

The death-row convict is Mawlana Md Shafi Uddin. The people who got imprisonment unto death are Tajul Islam, Md Jahed Miah and Salek Miah.

The tribunal also acquitted Sabbir Ahmed as allegations against him were not proved.

Earlier on Tuesday, the ICT-1 set Thursday to pronounce judgment in a crimes against humanity case against five Razakars from Lakhai upazila of Habiganj.

On May 17, the tribunal kept the judgment on CAV (curia advisory vault, a Latin legal term, meaning- the court awaits judgment), as both the prosecution and defence concluded their arguments in the case on that day.

The investigation agency of the ICT on March 21, 2018, concluded their investigation in the case and submitted their report at prosecution office. The prosecution on August 6, 2018, submitted the formal charge.

The tribunal on February 7, 2019, framed two charges of looting, arson, abduction, confinement, torture and murder against the accused.
