Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the Padma Bridge on June 25, but the authorities may not open the bridge to traffic on that day, according to Bridges Division Secretary Md Monjur Hossain.

Monjur was speaking at a meeting on the inauguration of the Padma Bridge, at Bangabandhu International Conference Center in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader presided over the meeting.

“Many are keen to cross the bridge on June 25. After the prime minister leaves [following the inauguration], a notification will be issued letting everyone know when the Padma Bridge will be opened to the public,” Monjur said.

That could be some time that day or 6am on the next day, he added.

Two separate events – one on the Maoa end and one on the Zajira end of the bridge – had been planned to mark the inauguration of the bridge, Monjur said, adding that the events would be telecast live in all 64 districts of the country.
