Jahangirnagar University (JU) has temporarily expelled five Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists for allegedly beat up party’s vice president Saiful Islam on Thursday evening.

The decision was taken on Thursday night after a meeting of the university disciplinary committee where JU vice-Chancellor Prof Nurul Alam in the chair.

JU Proctor ASM Firoz Ul Hassan informed this to media after the meeting.

The expelled students are---Imrul Hasan Omi of 47th batch Department of Law and Justice; Ahmed Galib of Bangla department, Kaiyum Hasan and Ariful Islam of Philosophy department, Tanvirul Islam of Zoology department. All are residential students of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall of the university.

Omi is the BCL deputy law affairs secretary, Galib and Kaiyum both are the assistant secretary, Ariful executive member and Tanvirul is a activist of the student wing of the ruling Awami League.

They allegedly had beaten up Saiful Islam of 45th Batch of Computer Science and Engineering on Thursday evening with iron rod, leaving him critically injured.

Earlier, some BCL leaders and activists allegedly assaulted two Jahangirnagar University-based journalists on Wednesday night while they were carrying out their professional duties during a factional clash between Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall and Biswakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall units of the BCL in Battola area on the campus.

They also misbehaved with the university Proctorial Body during that time.

A five-member committee was formed to investigate the incident and asked them to submit the probe report within 10 working days.
