JCD accuses Chhatra Shibir of fueling unrest at DUET
Bangladesh

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on Sunday accused activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir of creating unrest at the Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) campus under the guise of “general students”.

The student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) also condemned what it described as a “planned conspiracy” to destabilise the university.

In a press release, JCD alleged that Chhatra Shibir has long been attempting to create instability on the campus in line with its political agenda.

The organisation said Prof Dr Mohammad Iqbal was recently appointed Vice-Chancellor of DUET. Before the appointment, he served as a professor at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology.

According to the statement, immediately after his appointment, some Shibir-affiliated activists at DUET — posing as general students — launched demonstrations and road blockades demanding the cancellation of the appointment and insisting that the Vice-Chancellor should be selected from within the university.

JCD said appointing vice-chancellors from outside institutions is a common practice in many higher educational institutions, but the issue is being deliberately exploited to create an unstable situation at DUET.
