Hilsa price remains high in the market despite a rise in supply over the past few days.

After lifting the ban, fishermen are catching a lot of hilsa in their nets.

The supply of hilsa has increased in the markets. But despite the increase in supply, buyers said that the price is relatively high.

However, the traders say that they have to buy hilsa at higher rates from the wholesale market.

During a visit to Karwan Bazaar kitchen market in the city on Wednesday, hilsa supply was found higher than usual.

Hilsa weighing 600 to 700 grams was selling at Tk 700 to Tk 800 per kg while the ones weighing 1kg-1.5kg were selling at Tk 1,600 to Tk 1,800 per kg.

Ismail, a fish trader at Karwan Bazar, said he brought a total of 200kg of hilsa from Chandpur and so sold 10 to 15 kg.   “The number of buyers is lower compared to the volume of supply”.

Zulfikar, the owner of Maer Doa Matsya Arat, said hilsa price remains slightly high due to high wholesale rates.
Zafarul, who was visiting Karwan Bazar to buy hilsa, said the price was very high and he might not be able to afford a large hilsa.

Nayan, another buyer who came to buy hilsa, said the price was relatively higher in Karwan Bazaar.

Fishermen in Chandpur and Barguna are getting big hauls of hilsa this season. Hilsa has got low prices in the local markets there. In Barguna, on Tuesday (July 26), traders sold hilsa even through miking.

Traders said the price might drop in a few days.
