Govt must be changed to save education sector: Fakhrul

The education sector is the worst sufferer of the ruling Awami League government, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Saturday.

"The government must be changed to save the country's education sector. The Awami League government wants this country to remain dominated, thereby crippling the education sector. Under the Awami League regime, recruitment occurs solely based on political considerations, and textbooks lack educational content," said Fakhrul at the teacher-employee assembly at the Engineering Institution Auditorium in the capital on Saturday.

Taking a swipe at Education Minister Dipu Moni, Mirza Fakhrul said, "The minister's associates are involved in various crimes. They have embezzled crores of takas through corruption in educational institutions. Teachers and students are abused by the minister's associates. They have embezzled thousands of crores by illegally extracting sands."

Responding to the Prime Minister's comment that no one raised the issue of a caretaker government during her visit to the UK and the US, Mirza Fakhrul said, "Why would it be mentioned? Don't you understand from their actions. They know a fair election is not possible under the Awami League government."

Mirza Fakhrul said, "Businessmen favored by the government are panicking due to the US visa policy. They are worried about how they will save their looted money."

He noted that the media is bound to run in accordance with the government's directions.

Mirza Fakhrul criticized the prime minister's statement regarding the age of Khaleda Zia, stating, " Shouldn't one hesitate to make such a comment about a former prime minister? There is no etiquette among the party. They do not know how to respect anyone."

BNP Standing Committee Member Abdul Moin Khan said, "The government has destroyed the country's education system in a well-planned manner. Their aim is clear. They want to linger their stay in power."

Selim Bhuiyan, Chairman of Teacher Employees' Union, presided over the programme with General Secretary Mugis Uddin Mahmud in moderation.
