Transport owners are scheduled to meet with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to discuss an adjustment of fares, following the government’s announcement of a hike in the prices of fuel oils.

The meeting would take place at 5pm on Saturday, Khandaker Enayetullah, general secretary of the Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association, told Bangla Tribune.

Earlier in the day, launch owners had a discussion among themselves on adjustment of fares in light of the price hike.

Launch Owners Association leader Siddikur Rahman Patwari said they would soon hold a meeting with the government agency concerned.

The government on Friday announced that it had raised all fuel oil prices, which came into effect on Saturday.

Now the price of diesel and kerosene per litre at the consumer level is Tk114, octane Tk135, and petrol Tk130.

Chaos ensued at filling stations in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country following the announcement.

In videos shared on social media, people were seen crowding refuelling stations and jostling to fill their vehicles’ tanks before the hike became effective.

The government said it had been forced to increase fuel oil prices, considering high costs in many countries, including neighbouring India.
