Five killed as bus collides with three-wheeler in Sylhet

At least five people were killed and 15 others injured after a bus and a battery-run auto-rickshaw collided at Darvaste of Jaintapur Upazila on Sylhet-Tamabil road around 10 pm on Friday.

The deceased were Nur Uddin, 55, son of Mozzamel Ali of Jaintapur Upazila; Abdul Latif, 50, son Abdul Bari of Bargati village; Md Kamal, 25, son of Tariqul Islam Fasfara village; Musud Ali, 50, son of Late Khurshed Alam of Borokholas village; Abdul Motin alias Kachai, 45, son of Late Abdus Sukkur of Dighipara village of the upazila. All the deceased were auto-rickshaw passengers.

Quoting locals Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jaintapur Police Station Omar Faruk said a Jaflong-bound bus from Sylhet collided head-on with a three wheeler (locally called Tomtom) in front of the Darvaste Palli Bidyut Office on Sylhet-Tamabil Highway around 10pm, leaving five people dead and several others injured on the spot.

The injured were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical Hospital for treatment.

He said Jaintapur and Bateshwar fire service personnel with the help of locals rescued the bus that fell into a ditch.

Shyamal Banik, media officer of Sylhet district police, said police rushed to the spot and started rescue operation immediately.
