A Dhaka court sentenced suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons Bazlur Rashid to five years in jail for amassing Tk3.08 crore beyond known sources of income.

Judge Iqbal Hossain of Dhaka Special Judges Court-5 delivered the verdict on Sunday.

Earlier on September 1, 2020, the then Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of Senior Special Judge's Court accepted charges against Bazlur Rashid and transferred the case to the Special Judge Court-5 of Dhaka for trial.

The court framed charges against the accused on October 22, 2020 in the case.

On August 26, 2020, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Md Nasir Uddin - also the investigation officer of the case - submitted the charge sheet to the court in the case.

The ACC arrested Bazlur Rashid in the case - filed with ACC's Integrated District Office-1 of Dhaka - and showed him arrested in the case on October 20, 2019.

The following day, the home ministry suspended him from service.

According to the case statement, Bazlur signed a contract with a real estate company in 2018 to buy a flat in the capital's Siddeshwari Road area at Tk3.09 crore.

From April 20, 2018-June 7, 2018, Bazlur paid Tk3.08 crore in cash and cheque, but during ACC officials' interrogation, he could not show any legal source of the money.
