Information and Broadcasting minister and Awami League's joint general secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud said that electricity prices are still lower in Bangladesh than other countries.
He said this while replying a question from reporters at Rajshahi Circuit House on Friday morning regarding the increase in electricity prices.
The information minister said that due to the Ukraine-Russia war, the prices of fuel oil as well as electricity have increased all over the world. In continental Europe, in the USA and in the UK, there is electricity rationing due to rising fuel prices. Electricity prices are increasing.
He said the prices of electricity have not been raised in the country as in Europe, or Continental Europe, UK and other countries of the world. "Our government is subsidizing thousands of takas in the power sector. The government is subsidizing thousands of takas to provide cheap electricity so that people do not suffer. A slight increase is proposed to reduce that subsidy somewhat. That too is less than other developed countries.
