Member of Parliament for Bagerhat-2, Sheikh Monjurul Haque Rahad, has
said that the promises made to the people before the election will be
implemented one by one.
Speaking at a follow-up meeting titled “Implementation and
Accountability of Election Manifesto Commitments: Follow-up Meeting”
at the Dhansiri Conference Room in Bagerhat on Tuesday morning, he
said the people had elected him with a huge mandate and that he has a
deep bond with the people and soil of Bagerhat. Therefore, he
considers serving the people of the area his responsibility.
The meeting was organised by Activista Bagerhat and Rampal, with
support from Badhon Manob Unnayan Sangstha and ActionAid Bangladesh.
Rahad said the problems, expectations and demands of the people had
been carefully heard before the election. Effective initiatives will
now be taken to fulfil those commitments. He stressed that elected
representatives, the administration and the people must work together
in a coordinated manner to ensure development and public services.
The meeting discussed a range of challenges facing Bagerhat, including
climate change, frequent natural disasters, salinity, river erosion,
shortages of safe drinking water, declining agricultural productivity,
unemployment and social inequality.
Participants also emphasised the need for disaster-resilient
infrastructure, women-, children- and disability-friendly cyclone
shelters, sustainable embankments, safe drinking water, re-excavation
of government-owned ponds and climate-resilient agriculture.
Other issues raised included skills development and employment
opportunities for young people and women, expanding social safety-net
programmes, inclusion of climate-displaced people, control of plastic
and water-soil pollution, cybersecurity, prevention of child marriage
and trafficking of women, healthcare, education and the use of
renewable energy.
The meeting was chaired by ASM Manzurul Hasan Milon, executive
director of Badhon Manob Unnayan Sangstha. District Relief and
Rehabilitation Officer Md Anisur Rahman, Additional Deputy Director of
the Department of Agricultural Extension Apurba Lal Sarker, Upazila
Agriculture Officer Tanmoy Dutta, Social Services Officer
(Registration) Humayun Kabir, Youth Development Department trainer Md
Samsuzzoha, Karapara Union Parishad Acting Chairman Sheikh Jahangir
Hossain Liton, Secretary Jahangir Hossain Akon, Shatgombuj Union
Secretary Sheikh Altaf Hossain, Rampal Sadar Union Secretary Sushil
Chandra Das, Alokito Bagerhat President SM Arafat Hossain and
journalist Syed Shawkat Hossain, among others, attended the meeting.
The meeting reviewed the progress of the election pledges, identified
unfinished initiatives and discussed future action plans. Participants
also expressed their commitment to ensuring transparency and
accountability through regular dialogue among the people, elected
representatives and the administration.
