A special team of the Bangladesh Army identified four containers full of chemicals at the BM Container Depot that caused Saturday's deadly fire.
Lieutenant Colonel Ariful Islam Himel, commander of the 18th Brigade of the 24th Infantry Division, confirmed the development to the media on Monday.
Ariful Islam Himel said: "We managed to identify the presence of chemicals in four containers of the depot. Firefighters are working to remove the containers from the area safely using special methods.”
A 20-member special Hazmat (hazardous material) team with two tenders reached Chattogram from Dhaka to assist the fire service men working at the depot.
Monir Hossain, assistant director (training) of the fire service, said the depot authorities have brought handling equipment to remove the burnt containers.
“We have also prepared eight teams. At least ten containers are still burning and fire will be extinguished separately,” he added.
At least 49 people have been killed so far and over 450 injured in the fire caused by the explosion at BM Container Depot in Chittagong late on Saturday night.
Although firefighters managed to bring the deadly blaze under control on Sunday night, black smoke is still coming out from different places of the depot.
Three probe panels, including a nine-member local administration committee to probe the incident.
