A court in Cox's Bazar has sentenced four people to death and five others to life imprisonment for killing army officer Lieutenant Tanzim Sarwar Nirjan in the district's Chakaria upazila in 2024.

Those who were awarded the death penalty are Jalal Uddin Babul, Helal Uddin, Mohammad Arif Ullah and Anwar Hakim, while the lifers are Ziabul Karim, Ismail Hossain, Nurul Amin, Nasir Uddin and Abdul Karim.

Judge Mohammad Abul Mansur Siddiqui of the Additional District and Session Judge (Fifth) Court, Cox's Bazar, handed down the verdict on Wednesday, May 20, said additional public prosecutor Khurshed Alam Chowdhury.

The court also sentenced 10 individuals to 10 years in jail each and acquitted five others.

Tanzim Sarwar Nirjan, 23, was killed after being fatally stabbed by a robbery gang during a drive in East Maijpara area under Dulahazara union in Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar in the early hours of September 23, 2024, sparking a huge outcry nationwide.
