Several people were injured as supporters of ruling Awami League and BNP engaged in a clash in Dhaka’s Mirpur on Thursday.
According to witnesses, BNP men gathered at Mirpur-6 to stage protest in the afternoon protesting increase in price of essentials, fuel and killing of party men during the recent protest in Bhola and Narayanganj. A chase and counter chase took place between the supporters of two parties when AL men appeared in the scene.
Supporters of BNP said AL men obstructed and attacked them when they were going to join at a rally at Mukul Fauj premises.
They alleged that leaders and activists of AL and their sister organization, wielding sticks, chased them. Chhatra League and Jubo League activists have also hurled cocktails during the attack, they added.
Dhaka City South BNP former joint general secretary Iqbal Hossain said leaders and activists of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League, who had taken a position in advance, attacked them with weapons when they were going to the rally venue along with a large number of leaders and activists.
Eyewitnesses said police tried to bring the situation under control after both groups locked into clashes.
