The government will be recommended to import potatoes like eggs if the market syndicate cannot be broken, said AHM Shafikuzzaman, the director general of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, on Wednesday.
"We have fixed the price of potatoes in cold storage at Tk 27. But still some unscrupulous traders and cold storage officials have made the potato market volatile through syndicates. We are trying to break these syndicates. If the syndicate cannot be broken within 3-4 days, we will propose the government to import potatoes like eggs."
Referring Arman Cold Storage, Safikuzzaman said, "A persons named Russel kept a total of 15 sacks of potatoes in his name. In this way, Russell has made a syndicate by keeping other people's potatoes in his own name."
DG Safikuzzaman said Arman cold storage has enough potatoes. Another one-and-a-half month to two are needed to produce potatoes. The potatoes will rotten if not taken out during this time. Still, the syndicate traders are stockpiling, instead of selling.
