Workers of some readymade garment factories started agitation in Gazipur's Konabari, blocking the Dhaka-Tangail highway's Bus Stand area and Konabari-Kashimpur regional road.
To disperse them from the road, police charged batons on them and lobbed teargas shells that enraged the protesters.
The protesters then torched two buses and vandalised several vehicles.
Gazipur Fire Service's deputy assistant director Abdullah Al Arefin said getting information about arson attack on buses, the firemen rushed to the spot and brought the fire under their control.
It is learnt that, around 8am on Tuesday, the garment workers took to the street from their respective workplaces demanding hike of their salary. A counter-chase happened between the workers and police members at that time. At one stage, police fired teargas shells to take the situation under control.
The protesters again took position on the Dhaka-Tangail highway.
Additional number of law enforcement agencies are working to handle the situation.
Regarding the issue, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mahbub Alam said the wage board for garment workers is set to declare a new salary structure today. Hope that, the situation will become normal.
