Police on Monday sought a seven-day remand for the interrogation of Satkhira-4 Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Begum, in the case filed over the recovery of the MP's second wife Mariyam Khatun's hanging body from NAM Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.

The case's investigating officer, Sub-Inspector (SI) Shamsuzzoha Sarkar of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, gave this information on Monday.

Mariyam's father, SM Masum Biswas, filed a case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station against Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Begum, and Md Obaidur Rahman. 

The case statement says Mariyam married Gazi Nazrul Islam in June this year under Islamic Shariah. Her father alleges that from the time of the marriage, her husband Nazrul Islam and his first wife Maksuda subjected Mariyam to physical and mental torture over various matters. The FIR also states that Maryam had informed her family members of this torture by mobile phone on various occasions.

At around 5:30pm on Sunday, Gazi Nazrul Islam called Mariyam's father, Masum Billah, and asked him to come to his residence. When he arrived, he saw many people present. He later learned that Mariyam had hanged herself from a ceiling fan with a scarf (orna) in one of the rooms of the residence, it adds.

It also states that a handwritten "suicide note" was found on Mariyam's bed. It is alleged that the note, addressed to her husband Gazi Nazrul Islam, spoke of betrayal of trust and emotional pain.

Mariyam's father alleges that the marriage between his daughter and Gazi Nazrul Islam took place at the direct instigation of Md Obaidur Rahman, Mariyam's maternal uncle.

He further alleges that Mariyam took her life because she could not endure the physical and mental torture by her husband, Nazrul Islam, and his first wife, Maksuda, and because of their instigation.
