Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to visit New Delhi from September 6-8 to enhance bilateral relations on different fronts amid the ongoing global economic and political crisis.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told Dhaka Tribune on Thursday that the premier's Delhi visit date had been finalized, but a detailed schedule and programs were yet to be set.

The visit, the first since the Covid-19 outbreak in early 2020, is of significance ahead of the UN General Assembly this year and Bangladesh’s national elections late next year.

The premier last visited Delhi in October 2019 and later went to Kolkata in November the same year to witness the pink ball Test cricket match between India and Bangladesh.

Hasina also met with her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi at a high-level event on the sidelines of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2019.

According to Foreign Ministry sources, Sheikh Hasina will hold a bilateral meeting with Modi, and meet with Indian business delegations and political leaders.

She will offer prayers at the Ajmer Sharif dargah and the shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti during her visit.

The two countries may strike water-sharing agreements relating to the Kushiyara River and an extension of the Ganges treaty.

However, several sources have told Dhaka Tribune that a long-awaited deal on a sharing of the waters of the Teesta River might not be signed  during the prime minister’s visit.

Additionally, there is a chance that the state-owned Indian Oil and Beximco may sign an agreement on the import of LNG from India to Bangladesh to meet domestic needs for energy.
The visit will also focus on connectivity and trade between two neighbouring countries. India is keen to operate trade with its Seven Sisters states in the north-east through Bangladesh via train, land and waterways.
