United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for stronger global efforts to protect education systems from attacks, warning that exercising the fundamental right to education is becoming increasingly dangerous amid conflicts around the world.

In a message marking the International Day to Protect Education from Attack on Wednesday, the UN chief said more than 8,500 attacks worldwide had targeted schools, students and teachers over the past two years, resulting in deadly violence, abductions and trauma.

“Education is a passport to a better future for every child and young person. It is also a fundamental human right,” he said.

Guterres said all states have an obligation to ensure every child’s right to education and the safety of schools and other places of learning.

He urged all parties to conflicts to stop and prevent attacks on schools and other educational institutions, fulfil their obligations under international law and hold perpetrators accountable.

“Countries need to invest in education for every child, fully endorse and implement the Safe Schools Declaration, and support the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack,” the UN secretary-general said.

He also called for concerted efforts to prepare and protect education systems, both in person and online, particularly for girls and children in vulnerable situations.

Children and young people associated with armed forces and groups must also be safely reintegrated into schools and communities, Guterres said.

The United Nations provides a range of tools to support countries in these efforts, including practical guidance and policy support through UNESCO, he said.

“Together, let’s keep children safe as they learn and build the peaceful futures they deserve,” he said.
