The introduction of online submissions of nomination papers by election candidates will help breakaway from the tradition of the "showdown" culture during the filing of nominations, said Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal.
It can also significantly minimise irregularities associated with the nomination filing process, he said.
Inaugurating the online nomination submission web portal and election management app on Sunday (12 November), CEC Awal noted that the online submission was not only a straightforward process, but also had the potential to simplify the entire election system and rid it of any irregularities.

Awal also criticised the traditional showdown culture during nomination submissions, describing it as a potential source of crisis if it violates the election rules of conduct and creates room for conflicts.
The CEC highlighted the challenges faced by candidates during the traditional nomination process, such as hindrances and pressure to withdraw nominations.
Awal also emphasised the need for adopting a more streamlined and efficient approach.
"The Online Nomination Submission System [ONSS] can effectively address these anomalies, making the selection process easier and more transparent," he asserted.
Election Commissioner Ahsan Habib Khan, also present at the event, pointed out instances from the past where candidates brought large numbers of motorcycles on the first day of nomination submission to showcase their strength, often violating the election code of conduct.
He emphasised the two special procedures integrated into the app to prevent such breaches, ensuring a fair and compliant nomination process.
"In our country, where many people are prevented from submitting their nomination papers or are forced to withdraw their nomination papers, this app will thwart any such attempt," he said.
Encouraging both candidates and voters to embrace the digital shift in the upcoming 12th parliamentary elections, EC Ahsan Habib noted that the introduction of the Smart Election App helps the Election Commission to align itself with the trajectory of Smart Bangladesh.
While reflecting on past elections, Election Commissioner Rasheda Sultana stressed the undeniable influence of technology on preventing the code of conduct violations often initiated during the nomination submission phase, marked by various confrontations.
She expressed confidence that the newly launched app would contribute to increased transparency and accountability in the voting process, resonating positively with the general public.
Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Md Alamgir expressed satisfaction with the successful implementation of the online nomination submission system, highlighting earlier efforts by the previous commission to incorporate it into the law with limited success.
