There is no scope to hack the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), says Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal.
He made the remarks during a dialogue with Zaker Party at the Election Commission headquarters on Wednesday.
A nine-member delegation of the party met with the Election Commission and proposed blockchain technology and e-voting, alleging scope for vote rigging in EVMs.
In response, CEC Awal said: “We are yet to come to a decision regarding EVMs. But hacking is not possible.”
“It’s a stand-alone system and not connected to the internet. It has been tried and tested and we are carrying out our own tests,” he added.
“We have not yet gotten any evidence that it can be hacked,” he said, adding that the commission will come to a decision regarding EVMs only after ensuring no irregularities are possible.
Saying that the EC wants a free and peaceful election, Awal added that everyone must work hard to ensure it.
“To control the election field, all parties must be there. That creates a level playing field,” he said.
He added that there currently exists a peaceful voting environment and if it persists voters can safely cast their votes.
