National Professor Brigadier (retd) Abdul Malik, founder and president of the National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh, has passed away at the age of 94.
He was undergoing treatment at the Heart Foundation, where he breathed his last around 9:40 am on Tuesday, Prof Sohel Reza Choudhury, head of the Epidemiology and Research Institute Department of National Heart Foundation Hospital, told reporters.
Malik was suffering from age-related complications, he said.
On information, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her profound shock at the demise and said Malik was a pioneer in the treatment of heart disease in Bangladesh.
Alongside, he was a successful doctor, a renowned teacher and a dedicated social worker, said the prime minister.
He has been awarded and appreciated in various ways for his philanthropic activities and his enduring impact on the treatment of heart disease in Bangladesh will be remembered forever.
The prime minister seeks eternal peace of the departed soul and extends sympathy to the bereaved family members.
