The Ministry of Agriculture is going to allow import of onion from Monday (June 4, 2023) to control its price.

The decision has been taken "to protect the interest of consumers including alleviating the sufferings of low income working group of people in the wake of unusual price hike of onion in local markets," said the ministry in a press release on Sunday (June 4, 2023) afternoon.

At present, prices of onion show unusually upward trend. Local onion market become destabilise ahead of Eid-ul-Azha every year due to the tendency of making excessive profit by unscrupulous traders of the country.

Onion was being sold at Tk 95 to Tk 105 per kg at different kitchen markets in the capital on Sunday though customers have alleged that the prices have gone up due to the government's failure to allow import of onion from India.

During the month of Ramadan, only one and a half months ago, onion was sold at Tk 35 per kg in local markets. But, the prices have gone up by three times. The prices have increased by Tk 15 per kg over the last two days.
