Bangladesh

Police say initial evidence suggests that charges brought against former Jagannath University (JnU) assistant proctor Deen Islam and law department student Amman Siddiqui over the suicide of Fairuz Abantika are true.“Abantika was mentally upset due to various incidents,” DMP’s Additional Commissioner Khandkar Mahid Uddin said Sunday (March 17), adding that the two men have been handed over to the Cumilla police.Abantika took her own life at her house in Cumilla on March 15 at night. Before her suicide, she blamed Deen and Amman for her death.News of her death sparked protests on the campus, prompting the university authorities to remove Deen from the proctorial body and suspend Amman. A five-member investigation committee was also formed to look into the incident. The committee has been asked to submit its findings within seven working days.Abantika’s friends and fellow Jagannath University students have issued an ultimatum to the university administration, demanding justice and accountability. They presented a six-point demand to the university and gave them a 24-hour ultimatum for action. These demands include a thorough and fair investigation into Abantika's death, as well as the immediate arrest and prosecution of the accused individuals, the permanent expulsion of the accused from the university, and actions against those engaging in victim-blaming.Additionally, they call for the assurance of Abantika's family's safety and the bolstering of the university's women's harassment cell.
