Bangabandhu Parishad calls for improved quality of life for laborers and professionals
In a joint statement, the President (Acting) of Bangabandhu Parishad, Professor Dr. A. M. S. Arefin Siddique, and the General Secretary, Professor ABM Farooq, have called for an improvement in the quality of life of the hardworking people of Bangladesh and workers around the world.
The statement highlighted the historical struggle of workers for better working conditions and human rights. It pointed out that the movement for better working conditions, including the demand for an 8-hour workday and humane working environments, intensified in the 19th century when large industrial factories emerged worldwide. However, the movement faced suppression policies by industrial owners and the government.
The statement also mentioned the historical event in the United States in 1886, when police indiscriminately fired on workers protesting for their demands in Chicago. This event led to the acceptance of the workers' demands for an 8-hour workday and other benefits.
The Bangabandhu Parishad paid tribute to the workers who were martyred on May 1st and emphasized their indebtedness to humanitarian international labor organizations for the benefits they enjoy today.
The statement highlighted the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's efforts towards improving the lives of the exploited people of the world, including Bangladesh. The Bangabandhu government established the six basic principles of the International Labor Organization (ILO) and signed instruments of adherence to all 29 charters.
The Bangabandhu Parishad called for the improvement of the quality of life of all kinds of laborers and professionals in Bangladesh, in line with the path shown by Bangabandhu. They expressed their hope that the rights of workers will be protected from generation to generation.
In conclusion, the statement called for solidarity with workers around the world on the occasion of the great May Day.
