The government is planning to establish a university in every parliamentary constituency across the country, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon said on Sunday.
He also said that a village-based mapping project was underway to ensure that every village in the country had at least one primary school.
The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a workshop title 'Validation workshop on the Bangladesh Education Sector Analysis' organised by UNICEF held at the Sheraton Hotel, Banani, Dhaka.
"We are planning to set up a university in each parliamentary seat, and deliberations are underway. At the same time, primary schools are also needed, and a village-level mapping operation is being carried out so that no village remains without a primary education facility," he said.
Milon further said that the government was giving the highest priority to the education sector.
To reap the benefits of the demographic dividend, extensive investment in human resource development by 2041 is required, with education being the most vital area for this investment, the minister added.
Regarding higher education, Milon noted that the linkages between the industrial sector and educational institutions remained weak.
Efforts are underway to improve the situation, with special emphasis being placed on skill development, he said.
State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj attended the workshop as a special guest.
Campaign for Popular Education executive director Rasheda K Choudhury, educationists, and UNICEF officials, among others, also took part in the workshop.
