Former communications minister Syed Abul Hossain has passed away at the age of 72.
Deputy Press Secretary of the prime minister Hasan Jahid Tushar confirmed the news to The Business Standard.
He died while undergoing treatment at the capital's United Hospital around 2am today (25 October).
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep sorrow at his death and prayed for the departed soul.
Syed Abul Hossain was elected as the member of parliament of Madaripur-3 constituency in 1991, following which he was re-elected for three more terms.
He served as the Communications minister in the Awami League-led government from 2009 to 2012.
