The overall flood situation has deteriorated in the northern and central region of the country, inundating fresh areas and leaving thousands of people marooned.

The devastating flooding remained unchanged in Sylhet and Sunamganj though water of local rivers has declined somewhat.
Official sources said the water level of the rivers in the northeastern region was still flowing above the danger mark.

However, the water level of major rivers across the country was swelling and flowing downstream, leaving thousands of people marooned.

Flood victims were passing days in extreme misery amid acute crises of food and pure drinking water and the outbreak of waterborne diseases.At least 22 people died in separate incidents of drowning and lightning on Thursday, according to Health Emergency Operation Centre & Control Room of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

“Seventeen people died from drowning in Sunamganj and one each in Sylhet, Habiganj and Kurigram. Two people died in a lightning strike in Sunamganj,” it said.

At least six people died from drowning on Wednesday and at least five people died from drowning and snake bites on Tuesday, a DGHS report said.

At least 10 rivers were flowing above the danger level at 19 points in the country on Thursday, according to the FFWC.   The Brahmaputa-Jamuna, Dharala, Dudhkumar and all the major river of the northeastern region of the country (except the Titas) may continue falling, while the Padma River may remain steady in the next 48 hours, said Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, executive engineer of FFWC.

“There is a chance of medium to heavy rainfall in the sub-Himalayan West-Bengal (Jalpaiguri, Sikkim). As a result, the water level of Teesta River may rise and remain near danger level in the next 48 to 72 hours,” he said.

The flooding in Sylhet, Sunamganj and Netrokona districts may improve. The flood situation in Kishoreganj and Brahmanbaria may remain unchanged in the next 24 hours, he said.

The flood situation in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogura, Sirajganj, Tangail and Jamalpur may improve.

There is a chance of a short duration flood in the low-lying area of Rajbari, Shariatpur and Madaripur in the next 24 hours, he added.

The Brahmaputra River was flowing 45, 32 and 84cm above the danger level at Fulchari, Chilmari and Hatia points.

The Jamuna River was flowing 44, 54, 53, 45 and 40cm above the danger level at Bahadurabad, Sriakandi, Kazipur, Serajganj and Porabari points.

Surma River was flowing 99 and 19cm above the danger level at Kanaighat and Sylhet points.

Dharla River was flowing 19cm above the danger level at Kurigram, Ghagot was 27cm above at Gaibandha, Atrai was 12cm above at Baghbari, Kushiyara was 188,65 and 11cm above at Amalshid, Sheola and Markuli points, Someswari was 63cm above at Kalmakanda and Titas was following 63cm above the dagner level at Brahmanbaria point.
