Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has deemed the Cyber Security Act 2023, which is set to replace the heavily criticised Digital Security Act 2018, as anti-democracy.
"This law is anti-democracy and anti-journalism. It is restrictive regardless of whatever name is it called by," Mirza Fakhrul said during a press conference at BNP Chairperson's Gulshan office on Tuesday (8 August).
"The name of this act has been changed to fool the people and foreign countries," he added.
He also said the government is using the judiciary as the main tool to prolong its tenure.
"The main objective of Awami League is to establish a one-party system of government," he said.
"Awami League is trying to appear good to the people of the country and abroad. This is their character. There is international pressure against them," the BNP secretary general said.
He also said a fair election is not possible during the Awami League government.
"Those who will be our candidates in the election are being jailed. Verdicts are being delivered very quickly for this reason," he added.
