The constitution and electoral system do not follow the whims of an individual, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said.
The electoral system of Bangladesh has been established following the methods of various democratic countries, he said.
Quader made the remarks in a statement on Saturday protesting what he said misleading and politically motivated remarks of BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s remarks.
The AL general secretary said autocrats Ziaur Rahman and Ershad amended the constitution to give constitutional legitimacy to the power seized by them for their own interests.
Mentioning that those amendments of the constitution are being declared illegal by the country’s apex court, he said, “There is no chance to go back to that systems.”
Those who are now giving anti-constitutional remarks want to see an undemocratic and unelected government system, said the AL general secretary.
BNP leaders are giving their unconstitutional, undemocratic and illegal remarks about the electoral system and the constitution as they want to see the unelected and undemocratic government, said Quader adding that they (BNP leaders) are doing the wrong thing to mislead the people.
He said Awami League under the leadership of Bangabandhu’s daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is always in favour of an inclusive and fair election and it expects a competitive election system.
Mentioning that Sheikh Hasina always welcomes participation of all political parties in elections, Quader said Awami League wants participation of all political parties to testify their popularity, along with building habit to accept elections results.
BNP does not participate in elections sensing its defeat and if it joins polls, it do so to make the election questionable, he said, adding that if BNP secretary general's mentality is like that then the democracy would never be sustainable.
