AL govt cannot hold 'fake' election this time: Rizvi
Politics

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has warned the ruling party that the Awami League (AL) government will not be able to hold a 'fake' election this time.

He said this at a press conference held at the party office in Nayapaltan area in the capital on Tuesday.

Responding to a question from a journalist, Rizvi said, "If one leader of the party (BNP) is sentenced, another will hold the flag of democracy in his place. In this way, the BNP leader who will be punished will be replaced by another. And this time this government will not be able to hold a 'fake' election."

There is a strange regime in Bangladesh where justice and statutory legal processes do not work, mentioning that the BNP leader said, "Jubo Dal general secretary Abdul Monayem Munna has not been released yet despite being granted bail in all cases and the direction of the High Court not to file any further cases against him."

"The illegal activities of detaining him (Munna) in various ways witnessed across the country are unprecedented. Munna was detained in a pending case with a back date disobeying the High Court's order. Then, He was directed to be released when he filed a writ again in the High Court. But the directive has been ignored. Jail authorities are completely silent in this matter," he said.

Rizvi said, "Munna has got bail from all cases. But the jail authorities do not let him come out. They said Munna would not be released until they received direction from Chief Metropolitan Magistrate. This incident is a gross violation of the Human Rights.

BNP organising secretary Abdus Salam Azad, executive committee member Abdus Sattar Patwary, Jubo Dal president Sultan Salauddin Tuku, general secretary (acting) Shafiqul Islam Milton, and others were present at that time.
