Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has recovered 3.16 kilogram of gold from Benapole border in Jashore in tow separate drives.
The BGB members recovered 18 gold bars weighing 2.1 kg from Maliputa area under Benapole port police station at around 10:00pm on Tuesday. A motorcycle was also seized from the area but the carrier of the smuggled gold fled the spot sensing the presence of the BGB.
Confirming the news, Jashore 49 BGB Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Shahed Minhaj Siddiqui said the estimated price of the gold is around Tk 1.68 crore.
In another drive, the BGB arrested two youths along with 1.06kg of gold from Putkhali area under the same police station.
The arrestees were identified as Asha (28) and Sohanur Rahman Vishal (27).
Confirming the news, Khulna 21 BGB Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Tanveer Rahman said the estimated price of the gold is Tk 74.44 lakh.
The arrestees will be handed over to Benapole Port Police Station after filing a case under the Gold Smuggling Act, he said.
He said that the border areas have been kept under strict surveillance so that no gold can be smuggled to India on the occasion of upcoming Durga Puja.
BGB arrested four people with 3.969 kg of gold in the last three days, he said.
Mentionable that 21 BGB battalion recovered 1.233 kg of gold on Tuesday afternoon.
