Bangladesh produced another poor session on the first day of their second Test against New Zealand in Dhaka as they slumped to 149-8 at Tea.

They could only add 69 runs in this session, losing four wickets.

Nayeem Hasan and Taijul Islam are both at the crease on four runs.

After their initial collapse in the first session, Bangladesh were seemingly recovering as Mushfiqur Rahim (35) and Shahadat Hossain added 57 runs for the fifth wicket.

However, that ended when Mushfiq made a schoolboy error to get out obstructing the field.

The incident took place on the fourth delivery of the 41st over.

Mushfiq defended the delivery from Kyle Jamieson and after it was past him, and while going away from the stumps, the veteran decided to swat at it with his hand, hitting the ball with his right hand.

New Zealand subsequently appealed for an obstructing the field wicket, and the third umpire provided the verdict that he was indeed out, breaking his partnership with Shahadat as he got out for 35.

Article 37.1 of the cricket laws explains the dismissal as such, ‘The striker is out Obstructing the field if, except in the circumstances of 37.2, in the act of receiving a ball delivered by the bowler, he/she wilfully strikes the ball with a hand not holding the bat. This will apply whether it is the first strike or a second or subsequent strike. The act of receiving the ball shall extend both to playing at the ball and to striking the ball more than once in defence of his/her wicket.’

Following Mushfiq’s dismissal, Shahadat, playing his second Test, was also dismissed in a poor manner as he tickled a delivery well down legside off the bowling of Glenn Phillips.

Nurul Hasan Sohan (7) did not last long as he tried to take on Phillips but could only manage a catch to Mitchell Santner at mid on.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz (20) was the last to go in the session as he edged one to slip off Santner’s bowling in the first ball of the final over of the session.
