At least 13 killed in Sylhet truck-pickup collision

At least 13 people were killed and eight others were injured after a truck rammed into a pickup van on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway in the Nazir Bazar area of Dakshin Surma upazila, Sylhet, on Wednesday.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Nine of the deceased were identified as Haris Miah, 50, Shaurav, 25, Shadhu Miah, 30, Shahed Nur, 45, Sagar, 20, Wahd Ali, 30, Rashid Miah, 40, Dulal Miah, 45; and Badshah Miah, 30. All of them were construction workers.

The accident occurred at around 5:30am when the sand-laden truck hit the pick-up van carrying workers in the Kutubpur area, leaving 11 people dead and 10 others injured, said Sylhet Fire Service and Civil Defense Deputy Director Maniruzzaman.

The injured were taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared two of them dead.

Vehicular movement on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway remained suspended for three hours following the accident.
