Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said as many as 500 warehouses and factories in old Dhaka's Chawkbazar area will be relocated by December.
"These factories and warehouses are putting locals at risk of accidents. Work is underway to relocate those," the mayor said this on Wednesday while visiting the Chawkbazar plastic factory fire spot.
Taposh said, "That restaurant where the six employees were killed in fire, was illegal. It has no commercial clearance to get gas and electric lines. This is mainly belonging to Waqf Estate.
"The approval process of new building in this area has been kept stopped since 2018.We have identified more than 2,400 illegal buildings here, which will be relocated by turns," he added.
The mayor said that a place on the bank of a river should not have these kind of establishments, but be tourist spots.
