Detective Branch (DB) of Police is set to seek a 15-day remand for Sumon Shikder Musa, the prime suspect in the assassination of Awami League leader Jahidul Islam Tipu.
DB's Additional Commissioner AKM Hafiz Akter said this in a press briefing at DMP Media Center on Friday.
“Musa, who was brought back from Oman on Thursday, will be placed before a court seeking 15-day remand today,” he said.
Musa, who hailed from Anwara in Chattogram, is accused in 11 cases, including those filed for murders and possession of illegal firearms. He was convicted in one of the cases.
After making a plot to kill Tipu, who was the former general secretary of Motijheel Thana Unit of Awami League, he went to Dubai on March 12, from where he, with the help of some underworld criminals, worked to implement the killing mission.
Tipu was shot dead at the Khilgaon rail gate on March 24, and a stray bullet killed Samia Afrin Preeti, a college student stuck in a traffic jam in her rickshaw.
After the arrest of some suspected accused in the case filed over Tipu's murder, the name of Musa came to the fore. Later, the NCB sent a letter to Interpol seeking its help to arrest him.
Musa fled to Oman from Dubai on May 8, sensing danger. From there, he made several calls to some businessmen close to the assassinated Tipu, and asked them for money.
It was his (Musa's) phone calls that led the Royal Oman police to arrest him, said a police officer, who wished not to be named.
