Although the water levels of Surma and Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet are still above the danger level, they have started to drop gradually.
The water level at Fenchuganj point of the Kushiyara River has increased slightly but decreased at all other points.
Bangladesh Water Development Board Executive Engineer Asif Ahmed told Dhaka Tribune on Saturday that the water levels in the rivers of Sylhet had started to fall due to low rainfall in Cherrapunji and Assam of India.
But the water was rising a little in Sunamganj, he said, adding that dykes in different places of Surma and Kushiyara had collapsed on account of the height of flood waters being more than the height of the dykes.
BWDB Sub-Divisional Engineer AKM Niloy Pasha said the water levels of Surma and Kushiyara rivers dropped by an average of 13cm on Saturday and would continue to drop if the weather was favourable.
Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Dr Md Mosharaf Hossain and Deputy Commissioner Md Mojibor Rahman on Friday afternoon visited a dyke at the source of Surma and Kushiyara rivers, in the Amalshid area of Zakiganj upazila.
