Police have sought seven days in remand for BNP's Publicity Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie after arresting him from his Dhanmondi residence in the early hours of Wednesday (11 October).

Annie was arrested last night and has now been sent to court where the police sought seven days in remand," Parvez Islam, officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station, told The Business Standard.

Three cases have been filed against him with Dhanmondi Police Station and three arrest warrants were issued – one by a Dhaka court and two by Lakshmipur court, he added.

Confirming the news, BNP media cell chief Zahir Uddin Swapan said the police took position at the BNP leader's house around 1:30am and instructed him to report to the police station.

"The BNP leader was then taken into custody and transported to Dhanmondi police station around 2:45am."

Earlier, law enforcers in plainclothes picked up Annie after surrounding his residence.

Annie claimed that he was being targeted unlawfully.

Speaking to The Business Standard prior to his detention, he said, "The police are kicking the door, threatening to break in and shoot me if I don't open the door. I am currently on bail in all cases, yet they are trying to pick me up illegally."
